THE TOWN OF TORREVIEJA
|
Torrevieja sits on the Mediterranean about 30 kilometres to the north of Los Alcazares. A vast salt lake and salt marshes help make the town and it's surrounding area home to one of the biggest salt works in Europe. Whilst most of the town has been developed in recent years, it history dates back at latest to Roman times. You can still see the Roman Docks at La Mata, as well as ancient costal watchtowers which were used to keep lookout for Barabary pirates during the middle ages. Other historical monuments are La Iglesia de la Concepción Inmaculada, la puente de la Acequión and the Modernist Casino. The sprawling street market every Friday morning provides excellent opportunities for bargain hunters. Recent development of the seafront promenade has made it a geat place to take a long stroll and perhaps take a dip in one of the specially prepared bathing areas between visits to some of the many international bars and restaurants along the way. The town also has a number of nightclubs, a Yacht Marina and a branch of the Spanish Royal Nautical Club. On 16th July you can see the traditional sea and land procession celebrating the Fiesta of la Señora de Carmelo, patron saint of sailors. | |
