THE CITY OF MURCIA
|
Some 20 kilometres inland, the city of Murcia (pronounced 'murrthia') was founded on the banks of the Segura river by the Moorish leader Abd-ar-Rahman II in 825 AD. Today, it is the capital city of the Murcia region, though it shares some of the region's administrative duties with its older sister town Cartagena. It is also home to the University of Murcia which has over 30,000 students studying in more than 70 departments. Murcia bristles with fine architecture, including, the 14th century cathedral, The Monastery of Santa Clara la Real, The Episcopal Palace, The Almudi, The Convent of Santa Ana, The Sanctuary of Fuensanta, The Gardens of Malecón, various ancient churches, a fine casino and a number of excellent museums. The city's water-driven history is evident in the Hydraulic Museum and the old water mills on the the Segura. There is also the Museum of Murcia and housed in La Ermita de Jesús is the museum of the sculptor Francisco Salzillo. The city has hundreds of excellent shops, bars, restaurants and theatres including the Roman Theatre and El Centro de Congresos which frequently play host to conferences, art exhibitions and music festivals. | |
